Friday the 13th Mythology
Friday the 13th Mythology
Friday the 13th is thought to be an unlucky number in most western cultures.
There is a lot of superstition around it and interesting enough, quite a lot of fear. So much fear that Friday the 13th has its own name, triskaidekaphobia. It’s also associated with similar fears of black cats and walking under a ladder.
There are many origin stories to this scary day but the most common one is that Constantinople fell during the 4th crusade on April 13, 1204, radically changing the world at that time.
Begun during the middle ages, triskaidekaphobia is still going strong. People don’t go to work, don’t drive, don’t leave home. Once the day passes all is well.
The fear of the day seems mostly limited to North America but every culture has an unlucky day.
Another old common idea declares that 13 is a dark number and associated with the devil and death.
This idea originated in 17th century Italy. The number thirteen in roman numbers also spells the word VlXl which translates to death.
Death is X111 in the tarot cards and is sometimes depicted as a skeleton among plague victims. Newer cards have more joyful expressions of death, but the fear back then was rampant.
During the dark ages, the fear of the number 13 was perpetrated by the church. The idea was that while 12 was the number of the followers of Jesus Christ-13 was the number of witches in a coven who were causing death, destruction and the plague causing the persecution of many innocent women.
In today’s society hotels do not have a 13th floor due to this age-old superstition.
Italy has Friday the 17th as their unlucky day and many Spanish speaking countries fear Tuesday the 13th.
Triskaidekaphobia is everywhere but it’s just the number between 12 and 14.
In many earth based and pagan traditions, 13 is considered a lucky and female number showing us that perception and choice are individual.
There are many tales of Friday the 13th but there are also many positive attributes as well .
