Scrying: An Ancient Divination

Most psychics are familiar with the divinatory tools known as tarot cards, runes, crystals and the I Ching.

There are many others, as many as there are cultures in the world. Some are more well-known such as oracle cards and tea leaves while others such as augury are more obscure yet.

Let’s take a look at one of the oldest divination methods known.

Scrying is defined as the art of gazing or “seeing” into a reflective surface to see or foretell the future.

Many different reflective surfaces can be used but the most commons ones or water, a crystal ball or a scrying mirror.

Scrying techniques are a part of an ancient history of the occult and psychic abilities. To engage in such as austere activity connects one directly to the ancestral energies of earth and ourselves.

It is a simple method that can highly attune your third eye and open you to messages you were unaware of.

Often scrying is practiced for individual guidance but it can be performed for others as well.

How to Scry

Scrying is often done on the eve of the full moon but may be done anytime. The method is the same for all-gaze in to your object, receive and reflect.

Moon Scrying:

The light of the full moon is often used, and one holds their bowl of water, mirror or crystal bowl in moonlight and reads the reflections illuminated by moonbeams. Find a comfortable place, where you feel at peace and safe. Traditionally the scrying bowl was clear, made of crystal or glass but may be anything you like. I use an abalone shell . Many people choose a color or material related to their moon sign such as turquoise for cancer/red for Leo/blue for Pisces and so forth.
I was taught to drop 3 drops of olive oil onto the surface of the water read how they moved along with the visons that also appeared.

Usually however, the only menstruum is the water itself and any clear water will do.

Hold your bowl and gaze, that’s it. Reflect if you need to, closing your eyes when necessary and allowing your vision to permeate you.

Mirror Scrying:

Silver framed hand mirrors were commonly used but any mirror will do.

Dr John Dee (13 July 1527 – 1608 or 1609) a famous astrologer, mathematician and occultist for Queen Elizabeth the 1st of England made popular the “devils looking glass” which was an Aztec mirror shaped piece of obsidian. Obsidian is volcanic glass that has cooled quickly so it contains no minerals and comes in color schemes from black to red to gold and peacock colored. Dee’s mirror was black obsidian and he performed many divinatory rituals for the rulers of the time.

Shiny and usually black, obsidian is an ancient stone, here since earth began and has the magical properties of allowing the reader to separate emotion from mind, allowing visions to be seen very clearly . It is powerful and not one everyone should use it, but it has amazing capacity for divination.

Crystal Balls:

Who doesn’t love a clear sphere of quartz? You can see anything within your crystal ball no matter the size. Interestingly my crystal sphere is made from black and gold obsidian and was given to me many years ago by a wise teacher. At 8 pounds it is my favorite scrying tool.

A sphere of any gemstone will do but remember the idea is to see within your object, so the reflective properties are important as the universe is reflecting back to you what you are meant to see.

Scrying is a powerful divination tool and can bring clarity, compassion and clear understanding to you.

I strongly encourage everyone to try this at least once. The connection you will feel between the moon, earth, yourself and spirit is powerful.

The energy present can not only guide you, it will illuminate shadow areas of yourself that may need growth, and nothing is more transformative than truth.
