The Empress is one of my favorite cards in the deck. Far beyond the common meanings of motherhood and fertility, the Empress reaches far deeper in our psyche, showing us the extent of our strength and the innermost working of our spirits. She is the maid, mother, and crone combined.
The Empress is number three in the tarot deck. She is the 4th card in the major arcana of the tarot and finds her place between the High Priestess and the Emperor. She is a positive symbol of abundance, love and success and she is available to all of us all the time.
The Empress represents the full extent of the feminine essence of the universe and exerts a sense of calm, peace and prosperity when she appears in a reading.
She is an aspect of both Gaia and Kwan Yin and her power lies in quiet strength and order. She has achieved her goals by calm thought and forward action. She conquers through the realization that fear is only an emotion and with a deeply rooted belief system and the ability to act, the Empress has ascended to the Highest level of transformation that we can achieve.
Many people read by card definition or by the book. I do not. I read by tapping into the universal source of nature and allowing the cards to speak to me. In this way and with deep respect, I have learned the full extent of the integration of the Empress with Nature.
On her head lies a starry crown with 12 stars representing the 12 months of the year and we can see her nurturing extending over all 12 months in all directions. Every moment of life is touched by the Empress.
Her throne lies in a field of wheat, again enforcing her gift of nurturing the land. She is the earth Goddess Gaia in one of her many aspects and represents the powers of life and creation.
She was a sign of fertility to agrarian cultures and her blessing allowed rain to fall and crops to grow. Fertile land and healthy crops paved the way for prosperity and health which in turn led to fertile abundant lives.
In this manner the Empress has also become a powerful sign of motherhood, pregnancy and nurturing. She has dominion over all things living. She brings forth life from earth and us.
Her meaning has evolved within modern society and changes with each deck and artist but her influence on love, health, motherhood and creation remain the same.
She is ruled by the planet Venus and associated with the Zodiac signs Libra and Gemini.
She is a powerful indicator of love, health and prosperity through inner accomplishment and strength.
She is equal to the Emperor but not ruled by him. This allows us to view the absolute equilibrium of Libra and the balanced duality of air as expressed in Gemini.
The Empress rests in peace on her throne, content, loved and prosperous. With Venus as her ruling planet, she is all things loving and shows us the path to true love begins with self-love and acceptance and peace.
I don’t read reversals in any traditional way. In fact, I do not read reversals at all. All things have shadow and light. In her shadow, it may represent a need to look within, or that we may be slipping out of balance.
The Empress is a card of love, abundance, health and nurturing and she is a part of of us all.
