The Tower Card
The Tower Card – Cause for Fear?
In traditional tarot decks few cards frighten people as much as the Tower Card.
The anxiety around this card can be so great that I have known readers who removed it from the deck.
Yet, the tower simply suggests change so how can you help your callers deal with unknown fear and create a healthy outcome?
Some of the fear around the Tower card surely comes from the images itself.
The image of a burning, destroyed stone tower, alight with flames and lightning is certainly not a pleasant one and the early decks could be graphic in their destructive presentation.
Even today many decks continue to use these images which convey a definite emotion, so you may wish to work with a deck that has a softer tower image.
To understand the Tower, we must understand the nature of people at the time the cards came into being.
Times were much simpler and primal then. Destruction and death were big parts of everyone’s reality.
One of the safest places were the castles and stone towers built by our ancestors. They were presumably indestructible and safe but not protected from the acts of nature which can befall at any moment.
The image of lightning exemplifies this and shows us unimaginable loss and destruction of everything we know and have.
But does it? Let’s look again:
Spiritually, the Tower tells us that we should never allow ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security and complacency or allow our senses to become dulled to spirit.
It cautions us against becoming so comfortable and placid in life we lose the ability to grow, change and expand. The human soul is in a constant state of growth and evolution so if we decidedly refuse change and become stagnant a small tower experience may enter our lives.
The Tarot cards are not literal interpretations of events, they are the spiritual perspective of the human experience and how we walk this path in alignment with spirit.
The cards are neither good nor bad, they simply represent different aspects of experience and symbolize the many ways we can work with these experiences to allow for a healthy balance in life.
They offer deep and ancient insight if we are open to hear and within this wisdom we find change is good.
If the Tower card has entered your life it does not mean you are going to lose everything or everyone around, you or that you are facing massive upheaval in life. It means change is necessary in your life and some thing may be shaken up to achieve it.
You may never have found your soul mate if you didn’t leave an unhealthy relationship. Would you have landed your great new job if you hadn’t had challenges at your last?
I like to view the tower in a positive aspect as part of the soul’s journey. One must break down before building up, bacteria in our bodies needs to be destroyed before we can heal. One is synergistic to the other so change, no matter how seemingly dreadful it may feel, is the catalyst for rebirth.
Humans fear change, we like complicity and control and comfort. The Tower reminds us that shaking it up occasionally can be good.
If the tower does bring some radical changes or temporary loss of a sorts it still brings growth. The Tower card flows into the Star of Hope so the adage of things being darkest before dawn can be seem plainly in this transition from break down to joy, balance and new experiences.
Tower experiences can be very small or very great but remember, the Tower simply means things are going to change.
I pull the Tower a lot and I must smile because I am one to embrace change and when the walls have tumbled, I simply take the stone and rebuild in a different way.
We cannot avoid the Tower, change is a part of life, but we can choose to move through the Tower to the Star in grace.
How do you feel about the tower?
What have you received through change?
What do you think?
